Bass Tips from Tracy Black
Tracy Black of rural Carlyle has been bass fishing Carlyle Lake for about fifteen years as a tournament angler, but also just for fun. He participates in professional bass tournaments all over the country. In regards to helping the City of Carlyle host the first IHSA Bass Fishing State Tournament, Tracy's expertise and assistance have been a huge help. The current article is intended to pass along some of Tracy's expertise onto you.
"There are a few areas of the Lake where you should start looking for spawning fish this time of year. It has been my experience that in the spring, there are areas that seem to hold spawning bass more frequently than others. Keep in mind, Carlyle Lake has a mind of its own, so I should pass along some safety tips as well.
"The first area to check out is the South Shore and Dam East boat launch area. These areas are located on the south side of the Lake. Try fishing the pockets and cuts on this side from the Dam East boat launch to the old South Shore State Park. Remember, on Carlyle Lake you will not find many pea gravel banks that bass like to spawn on at other lakes. Don't be afraid to search the rip rap for spawning fish.
"The second area to check out is the railroad tracks towards the north end of the Lake near Keyesport. This area catches most of the wind coming out of the south, so the bait fish are plentiful. The water here should also be a little muddy. The muddy water should warm a little faster.
"Other good areas to try will be the Apache boat launch and the Allen Branch launch, both in Eldon Hazlet State Park. Here, fish all the cuts and pockets you see.
"Spring Branch is located north of the railroads tracks near Keyesport. If you are going to make this trip up to this part of the Lake, be very careful of the stumps on the north side of the tracks.
"Peppenhorst Branch is another great area to try, but again, be very careful as this area is also full of stumps.
"Carlyle Lake is a big lake and the weather here can change at a moment's notice. So, be very careful if the wind starts to pickup. The waves can come up very quickly and make boating dangerous. This Lake has a lot of low spots and submerged structure that you can't see from the boat. Get a god map and study the Lake before you arrive.
"These are a few of the areas to try. I hope it helps to narrow down your search. Good luck in the Tournament!"
